Imagine having such an obsession with food and how it makes you feel that you eat until you are in pain and then keep going. You have the mentality that if one cookie makes you happy then eatingdozens of them will make you feel great. You eat that piece of food and you have bliss then its over and you have to do it all over again. This is how it is for people with binge eating disorder. It's a metal disorder just like anorexia only at the opposite end of the spectrum. Where anorexics restrict their food intake, people with binge eating consume as much food as possible.Yet people with binge eating disorder are discriminated against while those with anorexia and bulimia are thought to actually have an mental disorder.
In our society if you are over weight then you have to take the initiative to change that, do a diet plan go the the gym, etc. If you don't participate in one of these things or you don't succeed in losing weight you are perceived as lazy.
People see people who are overweight and immediately make assumptions but they don't know the person's background. While anorexics and bulimics are perceived as victims of society's cruel and high standards those with binge eating disorder are the failures who can't conform. This idea stems from the mentality that if you are overweight you simply don't care about your appearance from the constant media influence and obsession with looks. When in reality those with binge eating disorder are suffering from the same compulsion with food that those with anorexia and bulimia suffer from.People are so quick to make assumptions about those that they don't know meanwhile the person could have a real problem. So why is one eating disorder "real" while another is just "laziness". This is how society judges others and it is wrong. People should be more aware of others situations before they jump to conclusions.

This was an interesting blog but I really enjoyed it. It not only informed me about something I knew a little about it also made me judge a little less. I don't particularly talk about others that are bigger, but I also didn't think of them as having a serious illness either. I also put some blame on society, it kind of forces its views on a lot of others who don't have a view for their self. This blog shows that you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Good job.
ReplyDeleteYour blog got straight to the point, you gave enough information and it was not too long! I really agree with the overall message that people jump to conclusions and are so quick to judge people. You informed me about binge eating disorder and anorexia and at the same time, there was a message behind the information, which was great! It's sad that people don't have the sympathy to try to understand people that are different from them and that have a different way of thinking. Your blog was definitely thought provoking, great job!
