According to American Cancer Society, more than one in every three people will be diagnosed
with some form of cancer in their lifetime. While there is no known cure for
cancer, there are many treatment options that are known to help put cancer into
remission.
Research for these treatments, and
to help try to find a cure, has been funded by organizations like the American
Cancer Society. ACS, or American Cancer Society, has help to fund every
research breakthrough for cancer since 1946. Not only do they fund research,
their mission involves much more than that. They make this mission clear by
stating:
“The American Cancer Society
is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to
eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving
lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education,
advocacy, and service”
Very little of their money comes from
government funding. The great majority comes in as donations from the public. The
money they raise not only goes towards fighting cancer, but also taking care of
cancer patients and making them comfortable. They offer free rides for patients
to their treatments. The American Cancer Society also runs Hope Lodges, which
give patients and their caregivers a place to stay for free if they need to
travel to another city for treatment.
Without organizations like the American Cancer
Society, many people that get diagnosed with cancer wouldn’t have money for
treatments, ways to get to these treatments, or a place to stay when their
treatment centers are not close to home. Not only would these patients not have
help with situations like these, the research to find these treatments never
could have been funded.
Since many of these organizations are
funded mostly through donations, without people in the public giving money they
would not be able to exist. These organizations help to save lives, or at least
give people more time to live. ACS states that two in every three people that
are diagnosed live for an average of 5 more years, partially thanks to them and
their services. Without donations, this would not be possible.
The more money donated, helps more people
be helped and funds more research to can be done. If every one just donated a
some money, even if it’s not much, more people could be helped. Who would not
want to help someone who is suffering from a terrible disease like cancer?
Every little bit helps.
