Time to Evolve
Many people across the country either support or dislike
stem cell research. Others have mixed feelings about it. I am a person who
believes stem cell research should continue because of the benefits it would
provide for mankind. The people who think stem cell research should be
discontinued are those who believe a certain process is the only process that
the research is associated with. However, that process is not exactly what they
think it is. In fact, there is an alternative method that does not result with
the same negative controversy or results.
The process that many people dislike is one that uses an
embryo in the research. In order to get the stem cells, an embryo was required.
The stem cells would be extracted from the embryo but this process would result
in the destruction of the embryo. This is the main reason why some people do
not want stem cell research to continue. These people think that they are
killing life. However, in light of this process, all of the embryos used would
have been destroyed or discarded even if they were not used for stem cell
research. Also, all embryos used for research are donations and unwanted.
A newer process for stem cell research does not involve such
an extreme result. An adult stem cell such as a simple skin cell can be taken
from a donor and transformed into a stem cell. From there, the stem cell can be
used to help aid in disease curing, cloning or even organ regeneration. All of
this can be done without harming the cell donor or killing potential life.
Unfortunately, some people focus on the negative rather than at least
considering the vast possibilities that stem cell research can bring.

People should focus more on the positive aspects of stem
cell research because there are more positives than there are negatives. For
example, they can be used to aid in the abolishment of diseases such as Parkinson's
disease and cure disabilities such as blindness. One major issue that the world
has is overpopulation. Due to this issue, food shortages are present. Stem cell
research will help provide a solution. It can be used to clone livestock which
would aid in the fight against world hunger. One example cloned livestock is
Dolly. In the late 1990's, Scottish scientists made a breakthrough in stem cell
research. They successfully cloned a sheep. Stem cell research would also
regenerate organs and limbs for those who need them. People who have not walked
in years would feel their feet beneath them as a result of research into stem
cells. The benefits are too hard to pass up.
Stem cell research does not deserve the negative criticism it receives. Stem cell research can accomplish things in a short time compared to other fields of research. I am not saying we should only invest in stem cell research. I do not think we should pass up this opportunity either. It's time to evolve. There is a tremendous chance that stem cell research could advance the human race immensely. I believe there is a reason for everything. If there was not a purpose for stem cell research, then we would not have discovered it.

To say that stem cell research is bad is wrong. as a diabetic are greatest hope of finding a cure for my disease is to do research with stem cells. People who give stem cell research a bad name do have a point that yes it requires a embryo to do it and you need a lot of them to make conclusive evidence but the possible cure we coud discover are significantly more useful.
